Drummer Sasha Mashin teams with Alex Sipiagin/tp, Zhenya Strigalev/as, Makar Novikov/b, Alexey Ivannokov/p-key and a series of guests on this collection of advanced post-bop originals. Mashin delivers a cavalcade of rhythm as he veers around the frenetic horns on the sparkling and assertive “Sipiagin’s Mood” which has the trumpeter searing through the stratosphere. Novikov provides some rich bass work along with vocals by Hiske Oosterwijk on the pulsating “Jazzmashin” while she adds textures to the impressionistic and lush “Paint.” Soul and funk are provided on “Strange Party” and “Ku Ku” while Strigalev’s sax gets angular on a Monkish “Sharp Night.” An eerie “Omulu Dance” has the keyboards providing abstract brush strokes, making the album big on sophistication with a healthy dose of exciting accessibility.
