Pianist Jamie Saft brings together a quartet with Bill McHenry/ts, Bradley Christopher Jones/b and Nasheet Waits/dr to mix post modern originals with edgy attitudes with melodic jazz standards. Of the latter, Saft is hip and sleek along with McHenry’s foggy reed on “Sweet Lorraine” while the team is dreamy for “There’s A Lull In My Life” and stately during “Violets for Your Furs.” There’s a bluesy lilt for McHenry’s subtones on “Vessels” while Waits delivers a rock beat on the pulsating “Decamping” and the team delivers loose moods on a puffy “Sword’s Water.” There’s a tentativeness to the originals that is absent on the standards, possibly reflecting the difference in compositions over the generations.
