Gene Jackson: Power of Love

Drummer Gene Jackson leads his Trio NuYorx of Gabriel Guerrero/p and Carlo De Rosa/b for a mix of jazz standards and team-derived originals. Of the former, the team leans towards Monk territory with a pair of tunes, a coy read of “Ugly Beauty” as well as a “Played Twice” that has Jackson snapping with delight, while Cole Porter’s “I Love You” highlights Guerrero’s graceful touch. The leader’s own “Great River” also has a Monk-like angularity teamed with a hip swing, while nimble stick work is featured on “Before Then” and the team stretches out on the dramatic opus “Land of the Free.” De Rosa’s bass works well on the pretty “Lapso” and “Neptune” while the three sashay with Jackson’s brushes in the lead on “Peaceful Tremor.” Impressive intricacies.
