VOICES IN THE SKY…Sebastian De Vivanco: Missa Assumpsit Jesus

One of the lesser known composers of sacred music, Sebastian De Vivancos (1551-1622) has his choir music brought back for 21st Century ears and souls to appreciate on this album by the all male De Profundis conducted by Robert Hollingworth.

The focal point is the 12 part “Missa Assumpsit Jesus” which was in celebration of the Feast of Transfiguration of Our Lord, and it’s a wondrous work. Serene and celestial harmonies are presented on the “Kyrie” and angelic blends of high and low voices reach the viscera on “Agnus Dei.” The “Credo” has a Byzantine feel as the choir sings out the Nicene Creed.

Other pieces include a flowing “Veni, Dilete Me,” a gentle and soft “Assumpta Est Maria” and a bold and expressive “Magnificant Primi Toni.” This is music filled with power and passion, making the present day productions of worship with drums and brass feel overwrought and contrived. The voices give a hint of heaven.
