Even though he’s played with the likes of Steely Dan and his own brother Michael, trumpeter Randy Brecker declares that this 1988 band with Bob Berg/ts, Joey Baron/dr, David Kidoski/p and Dieter Ilg/b was “a true highlight” of his illustrious career. This cd/dvd captures the band at it’s torrid best at NYC’s Sweet Basil, and it’s a hummer.
The team shows it knows how to lay down a funk line on the irrisistable “No Scratch” from their 1970 Idium album, while Kidowski and the rhythm team is off to the races on “Mo’ Joe.” Brecker and Berg create a gorgeous front line on the fluid “Moontide” and are at their hard bop best on “Hurdy Gurdy” as Baron lays down the law. A take of “Love For Sale” is a cooker, with both horns sounding inspired at their testosteroned best. This is when jazz was at a muscular apotheosis. Look for this one!
