Madeline Eastman + Randy Porter: A Quiet Thing

There’s truth in advertising on this one. Subtitled “A Collection of Ballads,” this disc has 14 tunes serenely delivered by vocalist Madeline Eastman and accompanying pianist Randy Porter. Eastman’s voice is assured and cozy; she and Porter sound relaxed and intimate on this well selected collection of modern compositions. Material from Boomers like Laura Nyro (“I Never Meant to Hurt You”), Brian Wilson (“God Only Knows”) and Randy Newman (I Think It’s Going to Rain Today”) fit quite comfortably with Chick Corea’s “Sea Journey” and Hal David’s “Alfie.” Even a song that’s normally peppy, “Pick Yourself Up,” is slowed down from a 45rpm to a 33 1/3, and even includes the vocal intro, making it almost a lullaby. If you’re ready for a moonlight serenade,  here’s your friend.
