Creative interpretations of standards are produced by vocalist Susan Krebs, as she surrounds herself in a pastoral garden with Rich Eames/p, Rob Lockart/wwinds, Scott Breadman/perc and Luis Mascaro/violin. Her voice has a cheerful, parloresque wisp to it, and she makes it work well as she sighs to Lockart’s bass clarinet and graceful pizzicato on “Oh, What A Beautiful Morning.” There’s a joyful serenity to the bouncy “Whispering Grass” and a calm placid peace as Lockart’s clarinet floats on “Some other Time.” The Caribbean lilt of “Spring” has Krebs in a cozy atmosphere, clearly enunciating each syllable, while she gets bluesy with some hip violin soloing along with Lockart’s tenor sax on “Light Out of Darkness.” A clever read of “Rite of Spring” has soprano sax and violin getting a bit energetic, adding some blossoms to the buds. Highly recommended for the music, vocals and mood.
