The past few years have found free wheeling tenor saxist Ovo Perelman releasing voluminous one-off summit meetings. This time around he sticks to life long teammate and alter ego Matthew Shipp for a 3 disc collection of improvisations and conversations.
The songs have no distinct titles; each disc has 10-12 “Parts” which are essentially parlays and intuitive responses. The telepathic team has Perelman puffing while Shipp bops and scrambles on Disc Three’s “Part 6” while they go Peek-a-boo on “Part 8.” There are even hints of “Prelude to a Kiss” during “Part 3” and “Jitterbug Waltz” is subliminally delivered during “Part 4.” Disc One includes a bluesy and dreamy “Part 4,” a frisky “Part 3” and a melancholic aria of “Part 8” with Disc Two having Perelman experiment with his mouthpiece, creating duck calls as he squawks on “Part 6” and sounds like a buzzing bee on “Part 3.” No holds are barred here on this opus of freedom.
