Mud Morganfield: They Call Me Mud

Son of the famed Muddy Waters, Mud Morganfield brings some of his dad’s dna into this mix of blues and earthy vintage R&B. Some of the tunes, with steamy saxes in support, give hint of Al Green during “Cheatin’ Is Cheatin” and “They Call Me Mud.” But, with Billy Branch’s wailing harp, you feel like you’re back on the South Side on “Can’t Get No Grinding” or with EG McDaniels’ bass on “Howling Wolf.” The team feels swampy on ”Rough Around The Edge” and Memphis bound as Ann Harris’ violin teams with the shuffling boogie on “Oh Yeah.” Morganfield can either sing with passionate clarity or wail like his dad, displaying a wide color palate on this low ceilinged cooker.
