Drummer Fernando Garcia mixes the world of jazz with traditional Puerto Rican rhythms called “bomba” on this fragrant album. His team of Dan Martinez/b, Gabriel/p, Gabriel Vicens/g, JanKus/gs and Victor Pablo/perc create volcanic waves of energy that rise and ebb like waves as guest Miguel Zenon guests on “Guasabara Puerto Rico.” The team does an intimate table dance lead by Kus’ tenor on “The Element” and the intricate percussion sizzles underneath the saxist on the hard driving and intricate “Audubon.” Garcia himself rides the whip like a cattle driver, creating an upbeat cantor for Vicens’ guitar on “Ideas Convergentes” or a soulful strut on the groover “Tiempo.” Cultures don’t clash here, they symbiotically thrive.
