Lewis Porter: Beauty & Mystery

Lewis Porter brings together an all star team of John Patitucci/b, Terri Lyne Carrington/dr and guest Tia Fuller/sax for some creative and thoughtful post bop pieces. Fuller’s joined with the band for only a pair of tunes, but she makes the most, with her soprano sax adding rich colors to the driving modal “Birthplace” and her alto bopping with delight to the bouncing bass on “Blues For Trane and McCoy.” Porter’s reflective piano is on display for the opening “Prologue” and is rich with impressionism as Carrington’s brushes are deft on “By Bye Blackbird.”Patitucci’s acoustic bass creates a rich pulse on “Chasing Lines” and is gorgeously lyrical with interplay on the melodic “From Giovanni to Jimmy” the team blows like a summer breeze on the gentle “Day is Done” and as serene as a sunset for “1919” while getting dramatic with dark tom toms o “Dazzling Raga.” Rich like kohl under the eyes.
