This is the third release I’ve heard by pianist Yelena Eckemoff, so I know that this most recent release is not a freak. She’s got a rich, spacious and luminously light touch, not unlike vintage Bill Evans. Her milieu is in the trio format, and she sticks to it here with familiar face Peter Erskine/dr and ECM recording artist Arild Andersen/b. I bring up the bassist’s home label, as this disc has both a sonic and visual similarity to the German-based company. There’s a calm pensiveness on many of the graceful pieces here, such as on “Melting Ice,” “Elegy” and “Sweet Dreams” that flows like a spring river in the Yosemite Valley. Erskine’s work is superb here, keeping the music like “Polarity” and “Whistle Song” moving forward without overrunning it, and Anderson’s sensitive pulse is a complement to Eckemoff’s melodic musings. Excellent outing.
