Earth-toned vocalist and creative composer Zara McFarlane puts together a mix of folk and jazz on this embracing collection. Her rich and red clay voice works well as it weaves through African percussion and saxes on pieces like “Ode To Kumina” and the Afro-funked “Riddim Interlude” while she can also get ethereal with misty reeds on “Pride” and churchified with a Sunday Morning organ on “Silhouette.” Grooves predominate here as well as the textures, and she slides through the pumping Hammond on the reggae “Fussin’ and Fightin’”and bass line of ”Freedom Chair” while getting post boppy R&B on “Peace Begins Within.” Her messages are about hope, but not in man but in God working through man. Encouraging message and music.
