The Ebony Hillbillies: 5 Miles From Town

Mixing late 19th and early 20th Century sounds with modern thoughts, Henrique Prince/fid/voc, Norris Bennett/banj-dulc-g-voc, Gloria Thomas Gassaway/voc, William Salter/b, Allanah Salter/perc and Newman Taylor Baker/perc make up the enticing Ebony Hillbillies. They mix old-timey pieces such as “Wang Dang Doodle”  with originals such as “Another Man Done Gone (Hands Up Don’t Shoot)” to combine the attitude of minstrels telling a story, but keeping the message up to date. Prince’s fiddle gets bluegrassy on “Hog Eyed Man” and does an Irish jig on I’d Ratha Be A Nigga Than A Po’ White Man” while sounding l ike he’s having a good time in the overall wearing “Carroll County Blues.” The band takes you to church as well, getting reverential during “Where He Leads Me (I Will Follow” while celebrating afterwards with a tap dance in front of the general store on “Five Miles From Town.” God fearing, facing the present issues, and keeping with the tradition, this band has it down just right! When are they coming to LA?
