Vincent Herring shows on this album that he’s learned well from his days with hard bop masters Art Blakey and Horace Silver. These eleven pieces are filled with toe tapping soul, with a core unit of Herring with Cyrus Chestnut/p-key, Yasushi Nakamura/b and Carl Allen/dr with a rotating guest list of Nicolas Bearde/voc, Russell Malone/g, Steve Turre/tb, Brad Mason /tp and Sam Dillon/ts.
The inclusion of vocalist Bearde keeps the mood variant, and he delivers excellent reads of material ranging from vintage Boomer classics like Bill Withers’ “Use Me” to “Summertime” with Herring’s soprano an excellent foil. V8 groovers are in abundance, as Herring’s alto is in molten gold form with all of the guests on “Hard Work,” and an excellent “Good Morning Heartache” while the addition of Malone makes for a wondrous “The Sun Will Also Rise Again.” Turre and Herring team up for a snappy Amsterdam After Dark” and thoughtful “Phineas” and Chestnut gets the spotlight during the buoyant “Easter Joy Dance.” If your vintage Blue Note collection was feeling lonely, put this one alongside it.
