The Who: Live At Hull 1970 Deluxe Edition

The rock band The Who were one of the most important units out there in the late 60s and 70s. They not only wrote and  performed some important music, but they delivered the first “Rock Opera” in Tommy, of which essentially an entire performance of it is here. For that reason alone, this is a worthy selection. Their other concert disc, Live At Leeds, is usually the standard by which their other concert releases are measured, but this one isn’t bad at all, as it also includes a very healthy collection of their pre-Who’s Next pop hits. “Happy Jack,” “My Generation,” “Can’t Explain” and “Substitute” all check in, with an added surprise of a Mose Allison tune, “Young Man Blues,” serving as the ringer of the set. Roger Daltry is in excellent vocal form, while Pete Townsends patented licks, Keith Moon’s iconoclastic drumming and John Entwistle’s creative bass lines make for a memorable show.
