Blues vet James Armstrong delivers some down home modern blues sounds on this strong and attractive batch of mostly originals. He’s got a rich sorghum voice which he uses well on the shuffling title track, and gets funky with B3er John Kattke on the back beating “Old Man in the Morning.” The rest of the team, consisting of Matt Murdick/key, Johnny McGhee/g, Darryl Wright/b and Andrew Thomas/dr get deep in the pocket during the feisty “Shotgun Wedding,” and with extra vocals by Johnny Rawls and Mary Jo Curry, deliver a soul grit to “Early Grave.” He does a pair of covers, including a danceable take of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” as well as an earthy sway with the Motown hit “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You.” As unpretentious and filling as mom’s home cookin’.
