Vocalist Jackie Allen reveals a great knowledge about nuance, timing and rhythm on this collection of material composed by bassist Hans Sturm. The remaining team of John Moulder/g, Tom Larson/key, Dane Richeson/dr, Geoff Bradfield/reeds, Victor Garcia/tp and Andy Baker/tb complete the team for material that ranges from swampy soul as on “Bel Air BBQ” to the delicate and reflective “Steal the Night.” She delivers some poetry to team up with Bradfield’s soprano sax on the exotic title track and gets smoky with Larson’s B3 on the strutting “NOLA Love Song” while Sturm and Richeson create a deep pulse for Allen’s Spartan mood on “Time.” She mixes up deliveries like a veteran closer in the 9th.
