Trumpeter Gabriel Alegria lead a sextet of Laura Andrea Leguia/reeds, Freddy Lobaton/perc, Yuri Juarez/g, Hugo Alcazar/dr, Russell Ferrante/key and Jocho Velazquez/g through a rich mix of free bop and traditional folk sounds and sonorities. The centerpiece is a four part Brooklyn Suite that includes a contrast of Alegria’s free feeling rich horn with guitar strums, percussive pulses and rich piano and organ interludes. Also in the mix is a rockish “Caras II” and a deeply rhythmic “El Norte” while the team turns into a hip bop combo on “Buscando A Huevito.” A mix and match of sounds like strolling through a series of small winding side streets.
