Directed by Bill Ryan, the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble consists of Hannah Donnelly/wwinds, Ryan Schmidt/cl, Darwin McMurray/sax, Makenzie Mattis/perc, Reese Rehkopf, p, Jenna Michael/v and Kirk McBrayer/cel. Together, the create fifteen pieces that are strong on gentle ambience, floating like a hovering cirrus cloud, with gentle pulsations edging the music forward. The woodwinds and reeds team together to create soft harmonies, as on “Glass Surface” and “There Are No Gradients” and the mood keeps pastoral throughout the entire album.
