Joe Mongelli has a warm and alluring tone on both trumpet and flugelhorn, arranging most of the material here as he teams up with Fred Boyle/p, Ron Ormsby/b, Steve Langone-Bart Weisman/dr and a couple guests for rich workings of standards. The brass is shiny and polished on ebullient reads of “I Got It Bad” and an elegiac “Alfie.” Ormsby proves bluesy bass lines on a hip “Bags Groove” and “Doxy,” the latter including cirrus flute clouds proved by Bruce Abbott’s flute. Boyle is rich and slinky while Mongelli glistens and Alan Clinger adds cool guitar lines on a richly undulating “Beautiful Love” which wafts like harvest wheat. Autumnal colors glisten in sunset here.
