Pianist Sophia Vastek mixes dreamy piano of modern classical tendencies with Southern Asia moods and harmonies on this album of her in solo form and with a few guests.
She interprets a handful of John Cage compositions in solo format with a wistful “Dream I”, lullaby-like “Dream III” and with vocalist Megan Schubert delivers an almost Asian liturgical “She is Asleep.” With Indian instruments on Michael Harrison’s “Jaunpuri,” hints of Debussy meld with dreamy drones and pulses as well as on “Hijaz Prelude,” where Harrison’s tanpura and Nitin Mitta’s tablas take the listener on exotic journeys with dashes of Satie. Intriguing melding of sounds and flavors.
