Allegra Levy: Cities Between Us

Allegra Levy has an easy sounding delivery as she mixes subtle swing with a quirky attitude on this a clever combination of originals and covers. Of the latter, she adds lyrics to Dexter Gordon’s “Soy Califa” and with the sizzling rhythm supplied by Carmen Staaf/p, Jay Anderson/b and Billy Drummond/dr creates some flexible and bopping fun. Likewise, she handles an intimate duet with Staaf on a subdued and noir-ish take of Duke Jordan’s Lullaby of theOrient” while mixing subtones and upper flights on “Yesterdays.”
Her own material has some whimsical moods, as Kirk Knuffke/ct and Stephen Riley/ts add soft horns to the easy bounce of “ Cherry Blossom Song” and she coos and almost whispers on the understated “I Shouldn’t Tell You.” Knuffke delivers a strong solo on the sensuously tango’d “Misery Makes the Music” as Levy sounds like the girl next door here and throughout. If jazz were  the world of Archie Comics, Levy is more Betty than Veronica. Always a good long term pick.
