Camille Thurman comes off as a double threat as she sings with a dash of Ella Fitzgerald and plays tenor with a hint of Zoot Sims on this swinging session recorded at a show in the Rockwood Music Hall, New York earlier this year. Her team of Mark Whitfield/g, Billy Drummond/dr and Ben Allison/b fit like hand in glove, with Drummond simmering as he deftly drives the team for the leader’s lithe solo on “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes.” Whitfield gets some nice licks in on the soul grooving “Road Song” while is deft like a trapeze act with Thurman’s horn on a snappy little read of “Nefertiti.” Thurman’s vocals are sweet and optimistic, scatting with delight on “Sassy’s Blues” and relaxed with confidence on “Detour Ahead.” The team closes with a clever read of “Cherokee” as Thurman and Allison generate more light than the usual heat, and it works well. When’s she coming to LA?
