Alto sax legend teams up with the Flux Quartet consisting of Tom Chiu/vio, Conrad Harris/vio, Max Mandel/vio and Felix Fan/cel through seven free spirited originals. A few of the pieces have Lake sitting out, as the spontaneous “ Sponge”, “2016” and title track are described as played with “ little notation” or “with the concept of filling the space” as they pluck, pick, saw and scratch their way through the “compositions.” Lake joins in and sputters while p uttering around as the strings go Bartok o “Hey Now Hey” while dashes of melody pop up between Lake’s screeches on “Disambiguate.” All of these pieces range between 6-9 minutes except for the marathon 21 minute “Einstein 100!” which includes dramatic plucking, looping strings and slashes with the bow. The liner notes describe the band as “fearless” and they certainly are able to work without a net here.
