Famed producer, composer and keyboard player, Jason Miles has graced albums ranging from Miles Davis to Marcus Miller and even Michael Jackson. This album is kind of a Groundhog Day for musicians, as Miles takes the same tune, the catchy “Blue is Paris,” and uses it as a starting point for 10 guests to bring their own solo work and interpretation to it. Four, count ‘em ,four trumpeters give various reads of the song, being Russell Gunn, Theo Croker, Patches Stewart and Jukka Eskola, each with a distinct tone and delivery, ranging from Harmon muted Miles to modern musings. Ricardo Silveira’s guitar gives a Benson burner, while Jeff Coffin’s tenor is mellow and warm. Most intriguing is Kicky Kej on a collection of Indian instruments like table and dumbek, while Maya Azecena is warm and R&B-ish. The only essential variance each time is what the guest brings to the table, so the certain sameness can be a little repetitive. Would Bill Murray buy it?
