Pianist Bert Seager composes all but one tune for the quartet that has him along with Hery Paz/ts, Max Ridley/b and Dor Herskovits/dr delivering intelligent post bop material. The team is quite flexible in moods, with Seager showing a dash of Bill Evans influence on “Welcoming The Water” and dashes of Thelonious Monk” on the laconic “Distances.” The band likes to open its pieces slowly, with Seager’s piano a lonely voice before the team catches up and comes to dramatic climaxes as on the jagged “Equanimous Botch” and “Last Snow” while Paz can go from a gentle purr to a defiant howl with east. The band closes with a snappy “Blues You Can Use,” showing a dash of tradition, with the rest of the album looking forward.
