Usually free form ensembles get highly cacophonic and self indulgent. Composer, saxist and pianist Rocco John Iacovone avoids all of the usual pitfalls on this concert recording of three songs ranging from 16 to 23 minutes. The rest of the team, ras Moshe Burnette-Bells/ts-fl, Sana Nagano/violin, Michael Lytle/bcl, Rich Rosenthal/g, Phil Sirois/b, John Pietar/perc and Dalius Naujo/dr join along the excursion, and while there are definitely moments of free enterprise, there are also cogent and thoughtful themes. “Aurora Borealis” includes rich percussion and a fun bass solo along with Lytle’s brooding bass clarinet. “ Evolutions” rumbles with exotica as Nagano and Burnett-Bells weave in and out of the ensembles. “What if the Moon Were made Out Of Jazz” finally lets the cat out of the bag, as some frenzied percussion , bopping violin and avalanching percussion take over the exciting bop beat. Fun and cogently free.
