Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr: Landed in Brooklyn

Warm toned trumpeter Julian Wasserfuhr and thoughtful pianist Roman Wasserfuhr form a rich post bop team with Maria Schneider’s tenor titan Donny McCaslin, Tim Lefebvre/b and Nate Wood/dr for 9 post bop originals. The team is able to range from a bluesy groove on a tune like “Ella” and can get into a funk feel on “Tutto” as Julian taps into his inner Freddie Hubbard here and on “S.N.C.F.” Roman’s  piano does some rich work with Julian’s breathy horn on “Carlo” and the team is thoughtful on the textured “Durch den Monsun.” The melding of the two horns is vintage quintet, with McCaslin tenor palpable bot on the former pieces and on the clever take of Sting’s “Seven Days.” Sophisticated yet swinging.
