Vocalist Marilyn Scott has had a decades long career mixing soul, jazz and pop. This indigo-hued album with Gary Novak/dr, Michael Landau/g, Russell Ferrante/key, Jimmy Haslip/b, Bob Mintzer/bcl and Ambrose Akinmusire/tp is definitely from her blue period. Scott has a patient, rich and well conceived delivery, with Ferrante getting kudos for creating a plethora of sounds and moods throughout. The keyboards get spacey with mallets on “Willow Weep For Me” while Akinmusire sighs and Mintzer’s bass clarinet creates a deep pulse on “Speak Low.” Late night piano and hazy sounds bring the focus to Scott’s strong and expressive voice on ”A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing” while she is relaxed and as calm as a veteran reliever with Landau on her own “I Wouldn’t Change It.” She reaches and grabs the inner meaning of “I’ve Got it Bad and That AIn’t Good” before sliding the piece into a clever soul groove, and is reflective and resigned on the synth and bass R&B line as she goes CTI laid back on a hip pulse on “East of the Sun.” Blue pastels and oils.
