Here’s a rich collection of two minds, twenty fingers and 176 ivories mixing together for 8 songs and 49 minutes.
Bruno Canino and Enrico Pieranunzi venture into the Great North and South American songbooks with 8 rich and ebullient piano duets. There are a trio of songs from Astor Piazzolla and two from Carlos Guastavino. Of the former, “Fuga Y Misterio” is suave and defiant but never cluttered, “Milonga Del Angel” is dreamy and “La Muerte Del Angel” is passionately urgent. The notes are rich and melodic and gloriously lyrical on “Muchacho Jujeno” and “Las Ninas De Santa Fe” while William Bolcom’s “Old Adam” serves up pre-Depression stride and chords. There’s a fun and adventurous series of rabbit trails on “I Got Rhythm Variations” showing that these gents have as wonderful ears and hearts as hands. This one’s a rich stroll down an old plaza.
