Pianist Colin Vallon creates rich and hymn-like moods on this ruminating trio album with Patrice Moret/b and Julian Sartorious. Vallon’s touch is reflective and rich, like a morning light in a church stained glass window, while Sartorious gently nudges the music forward with brushes to create a cadence on “Sisyphe” or a streamlike ripple with the ride cymbal on the trickling “Kid.” Vallon produces rich Old World chords as bass and drum keep pace on “ Smile,” he chimes like a bell on “L’onde” while rich textures are nudged during “Tsunami.” The tension of Vallon’s relaxed yet lyrical touch and the remaining team’s busy undercurrent is manifest best on “Rest” as the tug of war is exquisite in its release and pull. Charming with flickering candles of sound.
