BLUES POWER…Cary Morin: Cradle to the Grave

Rural folk blues get a treat from Cary Morin as he mixes originals with some clever covers on this casual album of picking, grinning and singing. He’s got a rural and rough voice, like the type you’d hear from a guy that you just picked up hitch hiking on the bluesy title track and the harp like picking of ‘  Mishawaka.” A dash of Rev Gary Davis sound comes across as the strings sound like a player piano on “Laid Back” while comforting strums hold up the message on “Trust.” Depression era moods create a sepia tone on “Back on the Train” and while the real roots get exposed on “Mississippi Blues” you get a take of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and it works amazingly well before Morin closes the album with a plead to God on “Watch Over Me.” Gritty and satisfying on many levels.
