Bassist and producer Roberto Occhipinti brings together a flexible all star team of Tim Ries/ts-ss, Luis Deniz/as, Manuel Valera-Hilario Duran/p and Dafnis Prieto-Mark Kelso/dr for a free form collection of material. Strings and Quinisin Nachoff’s tenor add extra texture while Kevin Turcotte’s trumpet sizzles on “Markato” and the celebratory “Trinacria,” while Wayne Shorter’s “Penelopy” includes tenor work by the guest. Ries is glowing on the soprano during the lovely “Dom De Illudir” and Stevie Wonders’ “Another Star” as a a lithe reggae groove on “Stabilimento” includes a rich gumbo of horns. Occhipinit’s most creative idea here is taking a Beethoven piece and bringing in a modal mood for Deniz’s alto on the imaginative exciting “Opus 132”, while he mixes Mingus and North Africa on the freely swinging “Turareg, and some fun salsa is stirred n “Que Bolla.” Impressive on a plethora of levels.
