Pianist Richard Sears brings along legendary drummer “Tootie” Heath to team up with Kirk Knuffke/ct, Steven Lugerner/as-bcl, Patrick Wolff/ts and Garret Lang/b through his five compositions. The band has a loose bop feel, as Heath’s crisp drumming pulses along for the horns on “Part One” and is nimble on “Part Five.” The dirge-like “Part Four” is highlighted by Lugerner’s bass clarinet, which also sighs with Knuffke on “P art Two.” Lang’s bass probes along with Wolff’s tenor on the languid “Part Three” mixing form with freedom. Intriguing, but a bit of tightening at the seams would have made a better fitting.
