Cellist/composer Andrew Downing puts together two discs worth of pastoral sounds that mix jazz and chamber moods. Teamed with Tara Davidson/as, Michael Davidson/vib, Christine Bougie/stg, Paul Mathew/b, Nick Fraser/dr and guests Rebecca Hennessy/tp and William Carn/tb. The melding of ebullient strings with subdued brass make pieces like “This Year’s Fancies” and “Parade” genteel delights. Mathew and Downing keep the musing moving forward with gentle pulses as on “Head Start” and “Fall In Line” while Fraser uses brushes like a water color master on the shadowy “All Alone on the Mountain.” The soft and subtle vibes add extra propulsion and ambience on “Family Portrait.” While the team flexes some muscle on the assertive “Observatory,” even the Strayhorn classic “Take the ‘A’ Train” is turned into a serene sunset with Hennessy’s pastel horn. Delicate and tender.
