Drummer Tom Cohen mixes mini drum solo workshops between full readings of jazz standards on this quartet recording with Benito Gonzalez/p, Tim Ries/ts-ss and Kris Funn-Mike Boone/b. The concise intermezzos’ have him get down on “Funky Tony,”snap on the snares on “Bahia Interlude” and work the ride on “Cymbolic Dream.” With the full band, Ries’ soprano teams with Gonzalez for a sleek “Black Nile” and is serene on Horace Silver’s “Peace.” The team with Ries’ tenor sounds urgent on “John/Wayne” and there is deft display by Gonzalez during a sublime “Dolphin Dance.”Nice mix of improv for drum fans and cohesion in the other tunes for the rest of us .
