Vocalist/pianist Daniela Schachter gives a tribute to the famed songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen. Not a bad call, as he’s penned some of the best jazz tunes ever. She treates them right, along with Mike Tucker/ts, Michael O’Brien/b and Mark Walker/dr.
No big surprises, but she is respectful of the melodies as Tucker coos alongside pieces like Here’s That Rainy Day” and a soft “Darn That Dream.” Her voice has a hint of an accent, adding a bit of exotica to a sleek “Come Fly With Me” while she is cozy on her own love song “Vanheusenism.” She’s able to do some scatting along in subtle fashion on “It Could Happen To You,” and shows her ability to stand alone as she teams up with O’Brien for an alluring “Call Me Irresponsible.” Her piano chops are perfect for the mood, dating you to Brazil on “The Second Time Around” and to the saloon on “I Thought About You.” Understated like an elegant evening gown.
