The band Os Clavelitos consists of Chieko Honda/voc, Anthonhy Lanni/g, Dan Kendall/b-acc, Livio Almeida/ts-ss-fl, Uka Gameiro/dr and Arei Sekiguchi/perc. Together, the create sounds of Brazilian jazz that has a feel of a modernized and slightly Anglicized revisitation of the classic Stan Getz bossa nova albums. The lithe percussion with breezy guitar and Almeida’s tenor provide sensuous sounds and undercurrents for Honda’s English vocals on material such as “Eunice” and “Sands of Memories.” Almeida’s use of the flute adds extra texture on the bluesy “Frost” and swaying “Profondo “Blue” while he gets a bit exuberant on the tenor during the poppish “Oblivion.” Honda’s voice is warm and optimistic throughout, while the rhythm team bounces with delight as on “Unrest of Mind.” Samba fans will have a modern friend here.
