**When we changed formats, this disc inadvertantly got ignored. So, in view of the fact that Winkler is putting out a new release soon, we’ve put this one up so you can appreciate the trajectory of this guy’s talents.
If there’s a snazzier singer/songwriter than LA’s own Mark Winkler, would
someone please do me a favor and point him out? This guy has a delivery
that is as sharp as a bank shot by Willie Mosconi, and his lyrical wit makes Proust seem pedestrian. Here, he’s surrounded with hipper than hep
hot locals like Bob Sheppard/sax, Grang Geissman-Anthony Wilson/g, Eli
Brueggeman/p, Steve Barnes/d, and Tim Emmons/b on songs that swing like
the Disneyland Tea Cups, but have an intellectual hipness like Mort
Sahl. Sure, he can do clever readings of standards as well, such as
“But Not For Me,” but what wins you over are exquisitely Armani-styled
cookers like “Sweet Spot” or 2 different versions (one for LA, and one
for NJ) of the sexy samba’d “Somewhere In Brazil.” Who else could rhyme
something with “Encino?” This guy reminds you why you liked jazz
singers in the first place-check out this disc, and look for him
singing around LA to promote this babe.
