Alto saxist Kris Allen brings a quartet together with tenor saxist Frank Kozyra, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Jonathan Barber for a lighter than air reading of originals. The reeds deliver post bop melodies such as “Mandy Have Mercy” or Lowborn (Proverbs 62:9) slightly staggering the melody, occasionally veering together for velvety walks hand in hand. The horns get droopy on the laconic “One For Rory” and silk and satiny with Barber’s mallets on “Lord Help My Unbelief.” Allen’s soprano venture bops well on “Bird Bailey” and soes a similar groove with the nimble “Threequel.” A nice mix of structure and freedom.
