Elina Duni Quartet: Matane Malit

I’m willing to bet that this will be the first recording you’ve bought of someone singing in Albanian. Vocalist Elina Duni has actually released a few albums before, but this one is the first to get any sort of American attention. She possesses a warm and haunting voice, and the lyrics have a sort of Latin-Hellenic sonority to their enunciation. The instrumental framework provided by Colin Vallllon/p, Patrice Moret/b and Norbert Pfammater/dr is subdued and understated, almost like Celtic folk music, as Duni’s ethereal voice permeates through the lattice of gentle and visceral material like “Ka nje Mot” or “Vajze e Valeve.” The spaciousness of most of the material hangs like a morning haze, and except for a couple of tunes, never leaves the morning dew stillness. Refreshing, cleansing and it draws you in to her pensive world of sound
