Some swinging post-bop material is provided here by Dan Pratt, who does an impersonation of Claude Rains on the cover, but inside uses his alto and occasionally his tenor for some originals and a standard. He’s got two different tones on the reeds, while his alto pungent and bright, with a beefy thick tenor, as he tangles with Mick Eckroth/p, Christian McBride/b and Gregory Hutchinson/dr. He likes intricate lines in his melodies, and goes angular on the tricky Monk-like “Gross Blues” with McBride and Hutchinson working overtime in the kinetic “Warsaw>’ Piano and bass get misty for Pratt on “River” while he gasps on the bouncy “Riddle Me Rhumba.” On tenor, he shows swing and swagger on a tasty “Speak Low” and is as rich as tapioca on the loping “Junket.” Nice and muscular.
