Here’s a band that takes you back to the soul-jazz days of CTI, as six covers are presented here with an emphasis on mellow hipness. The rhythm team of Joe Syrian/dr, Andrew Lloyd-Don Leandowski/b, Steve Carryer/g and Gary Schunk/key get into a nice groove on a clever read of “Come Together” and with some African feel, Jimmy Smith/tp and Mike Rumbell/tb let loose on a 3rd World “All Or Nothing At All.” George Benson brings his axe in for a thoughtful moment on “Darn That Dream” which also allows Steve Wood’s warm tenor to glow. Real fun, and the enjoyable straight-ahead juices flow well.
