Victor Prieto: The Three Voices

Can the accordion make it in a jazz setting? Victor Prieto gives it the old college try, teaming up with Jorge Roeder/b, Eric Doob/dr, Artur O’Farrill/p, John Ellis/sax, and some guests on a collection of mostly originals. He tackles Astor Piazzolla’s “Michelangelo 70” with drama and panache, while his frenetic unison lines with Ellis on “Chatting With Chris” is a white knuckler. The grooves get festive as Doob gets lively on the Latin “Rosa” and the sensuous Brazilian “Six Note Samba” is a direction well taken. Rich piano and violin make for a grandiose “Papa Pin” and Prieto pulls out all the stops for a glorious ballad on ”Recuredos” while he shows his rock chops on “Games 2.”Lots of variety coming from the squeeze box!
