Trumpets meet rhythm on this brassy collection of (mostly) jazz standards lead by the valved team of James Blackwell, Brian Owen, Brian Mantz and Cameron Summers. They work their embouchure along with a rhythm team of Kait Dunton, Cooper Appelt, Jake Reed, Adam Brav, Alex Frank and Adam Alesi, as the horns deliver crisp bop reads of the likes of “Milestones” and “Autumn Leaves.” The rapid unison lines mix with unaccompanied clarion calls on “Anthropology” while the bass and piano boogaloo through “Sidewinder.”
The multi-horn note for note replication of Miles Davis’ solo on “So What” is a trumpet version of Supersax, while vocals on Tim Gil on “Summertime” work well with the bells. The only ringer is an electric sol funk “I Wish” that feels as out of place as shrimp at a bar mitzvah. Other than that, you’ve got more brass here than at the Pentagon.
