It’s quite refreshing to hear a pianist that has a voice on the ivories that sounds unique without descending into cacophony. I’ve never heard a session by Markus Burger before, but this album along with LA studs Joe LaBarbera/dr and Bob Magnusson/b impressively grabbed my attention. His approach to a song is quite intriguing, as on many of them, such as on “Grolnicks,” he lets his fingers deliver these dark undulations all by his lonesome until the subconsciously subtle entrance of the other two gents gradually fills up the song. For the most parts, he sticks to relaxed and reflective tempos; his reading of “I Loves You Porgy” is agonizingly heartfelt, and “Blue In Green” is sepia shadowy. The themes and solos always sound thoughtful, and his lava thick touch conveys a sense of purpose with each note, chord or harmony. Long time compatriots La Barbera and Magnusson go together like cheese and chili fries, and are just as tasty. Intriguing music that you’ll want to explore with many listens.
