Peter Bernstein: Let Loose

One of the most consistently swinging guitarists, Peter Bernstein rarely gets the chance to step out in front. He’s best known for his work with drummer Jimmy Cobb, but he doesn’t lose a step using Bill Stewart on drums along with Doug Weiss/b and Gerald Clayton/p for a mix of originals and covers. His clean and uncluttered sound is palpable on the bluesy title track, while he glides over Stewart’s sticks on the easy swing on “Hidden Pockets.” Clayton’s piano uses space well on the laconic “Resplendor” while the team nimbly bops through Woody Shaw’s “Sweet Love Of Mine.” Bernstein and Clayton are delicate and dainty on the lovely “Lullaby For B” while the agonize on “Tres Palabras.” Solid state session.
