Can gospel music coincide with free jazz? That’s the question delivered and somewhat answered by the team of Rex Cadwallader/p, Mike Asetta/b and Arti Dixson/dr as they deliver elastic and flexible originals as well as traditional spirituals with classical vocalist Tiffany Jackson. The vocal pieces such as “Deep River” Elijah Rock” and “Every Time I Feel The Spirit” are more Marian Anderson than Rosetta Tharpe, almost operatic, in juxtaposition to the angular and elliptical trio undercurrent. The trio gets frisky during their five “Trialogues” as well, rolling in the aisles a bit, as they may say. The instrumentation and voices reach more for the gray matter here, hitting the head instead of the heart.
