DEM BELLY FULL…Taj Weekes & Adowa: Love, Herb & Reggae, Mighty Mystic: The Art of Balance

Time to check out more sounds of reggae!!

Vocalist and guitarist Taj Weekes leads a rich and thick team of Radss desiree/b, Adoni Xavier/g, Baldwin Brown/dr, Aya Kato/key, John Hewitt/key and Valerie Kelley/voc through some traditional reggae with added electronic. Weekes’ voice has a rich tension, almost like a male Shirley Bassey, as the thick grooves pulsate on “Life In the Red” and jump with the drums on the title track. The guitars chime on “Here I Stand” and while almost all of the songs have a similar medium tempo, Weekes’ voice is powerful enough to give variety to the grooves.

Mighty Mystic includes Stephen Thunder/g, Marc smith/b, Koga Rite/key, John Felice/g, Salvador Pindea/dr as support for Kevin “Might Mystic” Holness’ rich voice. The distinction of this band is that it includes a dash of 70s hard rock guitar on a number of tracks such as “High Grade,” “Woman” and “How I Rock.” Even more successful are the tunes with gentle acoustic guitar swaying along to “Easy” and “Solid As A Rock” while some synthesizer slides into the act on “How Many Miles” and “Fast Car.” A bit of variation on the theme.
